COMEBACK WIN BRINGS FOSSIL PARK STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

By Phil Mugavero

Lynn Haven, Florida - 11-July-07 - The Fossil Park 10 year old All-Star team won the 2007 State Championship in a way the team will never forget. After pounding Brent Pensacola 12-2, Bill Bond Pensacola 16-1, and the Lynn Haven Raiders 14-0, the Fossil Park boys went into the final game very confident and poised to win another State Championship. After all, Fossil Park was facing a team that they had beaten 16-1 earlier in the tournament. Fossil Park found themselves down early 4-0 after the first inning. Pensacola added 2 more in their half of the 2nd. Fossil Park came to bat in the 2nd determined to get things going. After scraping out 1 run, Fossil loaded the bases with 2 outs. Bret Maxwell came up and hit a grand slam homer to cut the lead to 6-5. Everyone figured Fossil was back in it, right? Wrong! Errors, both physical and mental, helped run the Pensacola lead to 13-5 after 4 innings.

Nothing was going right for Fossil Park. They gave up another run in the top of the 5th on a Pensacola home run. Fossil was able to put 3 runs across in the bottom of the 5th to chip away at the lead. In the 6th, Pensacola put up another run making the score 15-8 and seemed to put the final nail in Fossil Park’s coffin.

Fossil Park came up in the bottom of the 6th with not much life, but knew they had to get the bats going or they were going to have to play a second game. The bottom of the 6th led off with a single by Blake Duncan. The next batter hit a fly ball to right. One out. Drew Vimond then singled, moving Duncan to 2nd. Then a fielder’s choice forced out Duncan at 3rd. Two outs. Fossil now had base runners, but needed runs…..and a lot of them. Jason Mugavero singled off the pitcher’s glove and into centerfield scoring Vimond and moving Story to 3rd. Jesse Moeller followed with another single scoring Story making the score 15-10 and giving Fossil Park a heartbeat. After another single by Kennie Taylor to load the bases, pinch hitter, Mike Ferrandiz came up to the plate looking to put Fossil Park within 1 run. Big Mike roped a hard hit single scoring Mugavero and Moeller bringing the score to 15-12. The Fossil Park fans started getting louder and the Fossil Park dugout started to stir. Tully Allen continued the hit parade by knocking in Taylor and moving Ferrandiz to 3rd, then advancing to 2nd on the throw home. This put the tying runs in scoring position with hot hitting Blake Duncan coming to the plate. Blake singled to left scoring Ferrandiz and Allen to tie the score at 15. Fossil Park still wasn’t done. After Bret Maxwell reached on a fielding error, Duncan went to third putting Fossil 60 feet away from a miraculous comeback victory. Pensacola went to the bullpen hoping to find someone that could end the bleeding. Drew Vimond came to the plate already 3 for 3 on the day. The first pitch was high for a ball. The next pitch, Vimond ripped just under the first baseman’s glove for a single scoring Blake Duncan with the winning run to cap off an amazing come from behind victory.

The win brought a second consecutive State Championship title to Fossil Park. Fossil Park scored eight runs with 2 outs in a do or die situation which taught them a valuable lesson. NEVER give up!

Fossil Park 9U All-Stars take 2nd Place in State Tournament

By Gerry Guidice

Gulf Breeze, FL – 7/9/07 - Gulf Breeze, FL – 7/9/07 - The Fossil Park 9U All-Star team went 3-2 in the scorching heat in sunny Gulf Breeze to finish 2nd in the 2007 Dizzy Dean State Tournament. The team started off on the right foot, beating Lynn Haven by a score of 13-0, and followed that win up with another 13-0 win over Perdido, both on the opening day of the tournament. That put them in the winner’s bracket final with a strong Gulf Breeze team. It was a rematch for several of the players for both teams. Last year, as 8 year olds, Gulf Breeze & Fossil Park battled into the final inning where Gulf Breeze eventually won the game 7-6, and went on to win the 2006 8U Dizzy Dean State Championship. Sunday’s noon start was hot, and so were the Gulf Breeze team’s bats. A tough fought battle was eventually won by the Wave of Gulf Breeze, by a score of 6-2.

The Fossil Park team was down, but not out. They came back to the park on Monday to face Tallahassee (Levy County) in the loser’s bracket final. The team recovered from their loss on the previous day, and dominated the game for a 10-0 win. That win earned them a rematch with Gulf Breeze just 20 minutes later. While the boys downed some much needed fluids and food, the coaches worked on a game plan on how to knock off the scrappy Gulf Breeze team. A win Monday night would force the “If needed” game to be played on Tuesday.

Fossil Park lost the toss, and batted first. They did get a couple of runners into scoring position in the top of the 1st inning, but were not able to get them across the plate, and Gulf Breeze got out of the inning unscathed. Then Gulf Breeze came to bat, and the team from Fossil Park could not stop their strong bats. Though they battled to the end, and never gave up, Fossil Park eventually fell to the Wave 14-0.

Fossil Park was lead offensively by several players. Tony Jones’, batting average of .583, 7 hits and 4 doubles lead the team in each of those categories. Joey Jimpie’s 6 RBIs and Ryan Cook’s 6 runs scored, lead the team as well in those areas. Defensively, the team played well, lead by catcher Chase Bardes, who slowed opponents running game down early in the tournament, by throwing several potential base stealers out trying to gain a base. Several players contributed to the pitching (3 shut-outs in 5 games), including Chris Labrie, Ryan Cook, Tyler Ramsay, Tyler Sankel, Justin Dahill and Joey Jimpie.

The second place finish qualifies the team for a trip to Southaven MS to play in the World Series, to be held on July 27th through August 2nd. Members of the team are Adam Arredondo, Chase Bardes, Mike Chadwell, Ryan Cook, Justin Dahill, Mike Guidice, Joey Jimpie, Tony Jones, Chris Labrie, Tyler Ramsay, Tyler Sankel and Nick Wethington.
