Letter From the President
A Major Thanks
Players, Parents, Friends, & Family,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Managers, & Coaches, I would like to thank you for allowing Fossil Park the privilege of helping your children learn the wonderful game of baseball. I fully expect to have a safe and outstanding season of baseball.

Through the tireless work of many volunteers, Fossil Park has become the premier facility for baseball. With a rich history of success Fossil Park has earned many championships.

We feel that our continued success depends primarily on future volunteers to aide in the learning process of our youth.

Currently we have positions available on the Board of Directors. If you are interested, please contact any of our existing board members for more information. Whether you are interested in Managing a team, Coaching, or if you can only spare a few hours a week. Any and all volunteer time would be greatly appreciated.

We thank you for your support and look forward to a productive season.

Best Regards,

James Campbell

President

Fossil Park Youth Baseball

This spring the board had the opportunity to offer a series of coaches clinics provided by Jamie Nelson. Jamie is a former major league player and Devil Ray coach. He shared his philosophy on the physical and mental aspects of the game of baseball during the clinics. Topics covered included: practice organization, drills, communication, defense, throwing mechanics, offense, and hitting mechanics. The feedback from the coaches attending these clinics has been overwhelmingly positive.

“My coaches were so excited after the clinic they wanted to call the kids right away and have a practice,” said Manager Brian VanNostrand. “The parents were very excited about having the opportunity to hire him for a private practice. We had a scrimmage game after one private practice and beat the other team 13-10. I think the things Jamie told our kids made the difference between them scoring 7 or 8 runs and scoring the 13 runs.”

Jamie Nelson is once again working with the Ray’s players but is happy to provide private lessons for coaches or parents when he is town and available.

On behalf of the players at Fossil Park we would like to thank Mr. Nelson for the insights and techniques that he shared with our Managers and Coaches in an effort to enable them to help their players reach their maximum potential.

Fossil Park Renovations

On Thursday, February 19 City Council approved the bid by Eveland Bros. Contractors for the renovations at Fossil Park. Founded in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1954 by William P. and John F. Eveland, Eveland Brothers, Inc., has provided construction services throughout the State of Florida for the past 50 years. The company is currently owned and operated by the second generation of William Eveland's family, Sheila Eveland-President & Treasurer, Michael Eveland-Vice President and Secretary and William P. Eveland, Jr.-Vice President.

Some of their recent projects for the City of St. Petersburg are: Remove and Replace ADA, 4 Playgrounds-Walter Fuller, Fossil Park, Campbell Park and Lake Vista ;
Rehab of North Entry of East Building Police Headquarters;
Athletic Complex, Childs Park.

The renovations to Fossil Park include: fixing drainage problems in the park, providing additional parking, replacing the existing t-ball field with a multi-use field centrally located between the front field- concession

 stand area and the back field, replanting three trees for every one removed as part of the renovation, etc.

The contract was scheduled to be picked up Tuesday, February 24. “They have 10 days to sign the contract and get it back to the city,” said Holly Raphaelson, with the city of St. Petersburg. “After that the contract states they have 60 consecutive business days to begin the process.” Other information indicated that some level of activity would begin in March. We will continue to provide you with informational updates as we receive them through this newsletter and/or the website.

Fossil Park Youth Baseball made a financial commitment of $100,000 to this project when it was approved several years ago. The city has received those funds and approved the allocation of the additional necessary city budget funds at the February 19th meeting.

New and Greatly Improved Website

Fossil Park’s new website is up and running now thanks to Webmaster Rick Lovejoy. He continues to update it daily and all links will be activated before opening day. Some pages will not have much for they are "information reliant". But our visitors and parents can watch the site grow as the season progresses. The site address is: http://fossilparkbaseball.org
“Ad spaces can be purchased by any and all supporters. Some parents may wish to sponsor an ad to promote their child...that is fine too. It doesn't have to be a business but I can assure that the future will be great for many businesses,” according to Rick. People interested can simply click on the ad link or email any board member using the member listing. There are email listings to the park and webmaster on every page in the site.

There is space for links to sponsor information, links for each coach to post practice schedules, photos, park history, ... the list goes on. See for yourself how much the new site has to offer. You will also be able to contact any board member or the park in general through the site.

When the picture packets come out this season they will contain a media release form allowing parents the option of having their child’s picture appear on the site or not. To see this form in advance you can find it on the site under forms.

Opening Day Joining us again this year as announcer is Bill Henry. The Invocation this morning will be provided by one of Fossil Park’s new t-ball coaches, Baptist Minister Billy Little. Our guest speaker is District 3 City Councilman Bill Foster.
